Working at the craft of learning

March 23, 2008

Dave Ferguson invited a few people to kick off a blog carnival around the theme “work at learning; learning at work.”

I can’t think of a better night to write about working at learning because every Sunday night, deliverables are due for the online project management class I’m taking this fall at Syracuse University. I was randomly (as if)Â named the PM so it is ultimately my responsibility to hit the ‘submit’ button on time. It’s Easter Sunday. I have just cooked for a group. I’m beat. But, it is Sunday.

Sitting here, I’m reminded of a psychologist-turned-trainer I contracted with at my prior job. His name was Ed Lisbe. Great guy. Yup, that’s him in the picture. He’s the type of guy you can talk to for hours.

Ed once shared with me a definition of discipline:

doing what you want to do when you don’t want to do it.

So, on this Easter Sunday night, I’m working at the craft of learning. I’m doing what I want to do even though I don’t want to do it. It’s why I’m doing what I want to do.

I never looked at discipline that way before. I find my blog posting is feast or famine. Maybe doing what I like to do when I don’t feel like doing it is the way I need to approach it.

    Hi Tom-
My original conversation with Ed was about discipline and its confusion with punishment. “you kids need discipline!” when you mean punishment (go forbid!)

He asked me what I want to do…I said lose 10 lbs. So his example…don’t eat chocolate cake because it doesn’t support what you want to do. (I still need to lose 10…at least) Darn lack of discipline.
